Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry reaffirmed its strong commitment to achieving the Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 target—an initiative aimed at turning the forestry and land-use sector into a net carbon sink of 140 million tons of CO₂e by 2030.
This pledge was reiterated by Secretary General of the Ministry, Dr. Ir. Mahfudz, M.P., during the closing session of the Journalist Workshop on Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030, held in Jakarta.
According to Mahfudz, reaching the FOLU Net Sink target requires spatial-based approaches, substantial reduction in deforestation and degradation, enhanced forest functions, and improved community welfare.
He emphasized the pivotal role of the media in raising public awareness and disseminating accurate information to build widespread support for the initiative.
Agus Justianto, Senior Advisor to the FOLU Working Team, echoed this sentiment, stating that journalists serve as vital conduits between technical policies and public understanding.
Through balanced reporting and inspirational storytelling, the media can play a transformative role in shaping public perception and driving collective environmental action.
The two-day workshop (June 16–17) brought together 22 selected national journalists and included both dialogue sessions and a field visit to the Rumpin Nursery in Bogor.
Within a month following the workshop, over 100 media articles were published on the topic—an encouraging indicator of the media’s engagement with climate action.
To acknowledge their contributions, four journalists received appreciation awards: two received electric bikes from APHI and APP Group, while the others were awarded mobile phones and televisions sponsored by ANL Logistics and Pilar Network.
Krisdianto, Head of Public Relations and International Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry, underlined that the workshop was designed to deepen journalists’ understanding of FOLU Net Sink 2030 and inspire solution-driven environmental journalism.
Iwan Setiawan, Deputy Director of APP Group, highlighted that the electric bikes serve not just as rewards but as symbols of clean energy adoption. He noted the importance of private sector engagement in amplifying collective climate efforts.
Meanwhile, Nety Sri Rejeki, Founder of ANL Logistics, expressed her hope for stronger future collaboration among government, media, and the private sector in promoting forest preservation and climate solutions.
“With effective communication, the public can better grasp the importance of FOLU Net Sink 2030 in maintaining ecosystem balance and supporting Indonesia’s sustainable development,” she said. (*)
